21410 | Full Remodel
Working within the envelope of this split-level home, we removed interior walls, vaulted the ceiling and added generous windows along the east, south and west facades. The result is a light-filled, airy dwelling that lives large and is engaged with its surrounding gardens and outdoor living areas.
The former masonry fireplace was removed and replaced with a walnut-clad fireplace and cabinetry column that connects and organizes living, kitchen, entry and dining spaces. The formerly enclosed stair to the lower and upper levels was replaced with open steel stringers and floating oak treads; walnut slat screens provide separation and privacy while still allowing light to filter through.
The lower level was gutted and reconfigured to add a bathroom and flex spaces for an office, den, crafts and games, all opening up to the west yard through large French doors.
Exterior materials were selected to demarcate the different volumes of the home. The newly vaulted single-story entry/living/dining/kitchen space was clad in T&G cedar, visually and functionally a gasket between the adjacent garage and two-story volume that encloses sleeping and private spaces.
